Teaching Philosophy
As educators, our role in the lives of students can have a large impact. We have the opportunity to empower them with the ability to think critically, make informed choices, and broaden their perspective. Our unique responsibility is to build upon student experiences and nurture positive relationships with them. By providing students with a foundation of knowledge and enabling them to think critically and creatively, education lays the groundwork for a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable future.
As an artist-teacher, I tailor my instructional delivery to engage students in hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that promote active exploration and discovery. Utilizing a variety of instructional strategies and incorporating technology where appropriate, I aim to foster a dynamic and interactive learning environment that inspires curiosity and creativity. Through contextual planning and preparation, I design lessons that integrate both art history and studio practice, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of artistic traditions and contemporary practices. Through presentations, digital resources, research, and exemplars, I teach about culture and educate students on diverse artists and their work.
By understanding the unique needs, interests, and backgrounds of each student, I am able to differentiate instruction and create inclusive learning experiences that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities. Classroom management is grounded in mutual respect, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement. By establishing a supportive and inclusive classroom culture, I create a safe space where students feel empowered to take risks, share their ideas, and collaborate with their peers. Authentic assessment methods such as portfolios, critiques, and self-reflection, allow students to demonstrate their understanding and progress as artists.
By fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, integrating best practices, and providing meaningful opportunities for exploration and expression, I aim to inspire a lifelong love of art and learning in my students. Together, we can cultivate a community of thoughtful, compassionate, and socially conscious artists who are equipped to make a positive impact in the world.
